The Fifth Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange US-China Eminent Persons Forum Underscores Commitment to Constructive Engagement

The Fifth Meeting of the US-China Eminent Persons Forum was held successfully in Beijing by the United States-China Transpacific Foundation and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs on October 13th, 2023. The United States delegation was co-led by Senator Joseph Lieberman, Former United States Senator (Connecticut-Democrat) and Ambassador Sigmund Rogich, Chairman of the Boards of the United States-China Transpacific Foundation, and the Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Wang Chao, President of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. Representatives from the United States and China engaged in in-depth discussions regarding the current state and future prospects of Sino-American relations.

 

During the meeting, both distinguished American and Chinese political veterans emphasized the importance of the US-China relationship and the need for both sides to bridge divides through open communication and mutual understanding. They urged continued constructive dialogue to build trust and find common ground, stressing that cooperation benefits both nations and prevents escalating tensions.

 

The participants on the United States side include General Richard Myers, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mr. Randall Rader, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Ambassador Untermeyer, former United States Ambassador to Qatar, and Mr. Gavin Chen, President of the United States-China Transpacific Foundation.

 

The US contingent participating in the forum also featured high-profile individuals including former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Richard Myers, ex-Federal Circuit Chief Judge Randall Rader, past ambassador to Qatar Ambassador Untermeyer, and Transpacific Foundation President Gavin Chen

 

Participants from the Chinese delegation also include key figures Dr. Qiu Yuanping, former Minister of the State Council’s Office for Overseas Chinese Affairs and former Executive Deputy Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Leading Group of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Ambassador Cui Tiankai, Advisor to the Council of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs and former Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Mr. Wang Zaixi, former Vice Minister of Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and former Vice President of Association for Relations across the Taiwan Straits, Mr. Kong Dan, President of China International Trust and Investment Corporation Foundation for Reform and Development Studies and former Chairman of the China International Trust and Investment Corporation Group, Ambassador Li Jie, Vice President of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, Professor Ding Yifan, former Vice Director of World Development Research Institute of the Development Research Center of the State Council, Professor Lin Zhenyi, Director General of the Department of Scientific Research of China National Academy of Governance, and Professor Zhang Bin, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

2023 Dialogue Session Between Visiting US Delegates and CITIC Foundation Focuses on Revitalizing Constructive Bilateral Partnership

A constructive dialogue session was held on October 14 between visiting American delegates to the US-China Eminent Persons Forum and leadership from China's influential CITIC Foundation for Reform and Development Studies.

Focus areas discussed included potential cooperation across economic, trade, institutional, climate, energy, and cultural spheres. Participants engaged in candid exchanges on paths forward to stabilize and strengthen the vital US-China relationship in the interests of both nations.

There was mutual hope expressed during the talks to revive dormant communication mechanisms, build understanding, and identify new opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration.

Former CITIC Group Chairman Kong Dan chaired the in-depth discussions, which brought together influential voices to address divisions and identify shared interests.

The Fourth Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange US-China Eminent Persons Forum Held Successfully

The Fourth Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange -- US-China Eminent Persons Forum, co-hosted by the US-China Transpacific Foundation (UCTPF) and Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), was successfully held in New York City, USA, on November 14, 2022. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Wang Chao, President of the CPIFA, Amb. Sigmund Rogich, Chairman of UCTPF. Meeting conference room and arrangement was kindly provided by Bank of China within their office building. Participants from both US and China had an opened talk and discussed on issues, challenges and understanding faced by both sides. Both mutually agreed on the need to keep the channel for exchange open, which is critical for bilateral relationship. Both also agreed on putting focus on a few attainable cooperative issues.

The Third Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange US-China Eminent Persons Forum Held Successfully

From December 8th to 9th, 2021, the US-China Pacific Foundation and the China Association for Public Diplomacy jointly held the third "US-China Track 2 High-Level Dialogue - US-China Prominent Figures Forum" via online. Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, delivered a written speech at the opening ceremony of the conference. Wang Chao, President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, and Senator Joseph Lieberman, Former senior US Senator (Connecticut-D) led delegations from both China and US to participate respectively. The conference was co-chaired by Zhao Weiping, Vice President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sigmund Rogich, former senior assistant to US President and Chairman of UCTPF, and Senator Joseph Lieberman, where both delegations conducted in-depth discussions on issues related to US-China relations.

The Second Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange US-China Eminent Persons Forum Held Successfully

The Second Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange -- US-China Eminent Persons Forum, co-hosted by the US-China Transpacific Foundation(UCTPF) and Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), was held online successfully from 8th to 9th December, 2020. Mr. Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs delivered a video speech. Dr. Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, attended the meeting and shared his views on US-China relations. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Wang Chao, President of the CPIFA, Amb. Sigmund Rogich, Chairman of UCTPF and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Former senior US Senator (Connecticut-D). The two sides had in-depth discussions on US-China political, economic and trade relations.

The First Meeting of the US-China Track II High-level Exchange US-China Eminent Persons Forum Held Successfully

The first meeting of US-China Track Two High Level Exchange--US-China Eminent Persons Forum was co-hosted by the US-China Transpacific Foundation (UCTPF) and the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA) at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing from September 16 to 17, 2019.

The Chinese Delegation of this forum is headed by Mr. Wang Chao, President of CPIFA with members including Mr. Zhao Qizheng, former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Minister of the Information Office of the State Council, Amb. Zhou Wenzhong, former Chinese Ambassador to the US and former Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Mr. Li Junru, former Vice President of the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China, Mr. Long Yongtu, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation and Chief Negotiator for China’s WTO Accession, Gen. During the Forum, the Chinese and the US sides had a frank and in-depth exchange of views on promoting the development of China-US relations, enhancing strategic mutual trust, reviving economic and trade cooperation as well as international and regional issues of common concern. 
 

Both sides agreed that communication is of great necessity and they are willing to continue the exchange in appropriate forms within the framework of the "US-China Eminent Persons Forum".

Seminar between the US Delegation for the First Meeting of US-China Eminent Persons Forum and CITIC Foundation

A seminar was held between the US Delegation for the first meeting of the US-China Eminent Persons Forum and CITIC Foundation for Reform and Development Studies on September 18th, 2019.

 

Starting from the topics of "trade barriers and tariffs", " science and technology development and protection", "investment" and "finance", both sides held in-depth discussions on "how to revive economic cooperation to serve as a stabilizer for better bilateral relations" and exchanged views frankly. Both sides agreed that dialogues and negotiations should be maintained in the event of a crisis in strategic mutual trust between China and the United States.

The Seminar was chaired by Mr. Kong Dan, President of CITIC Foundation for Reform and Development Studies, Former Chairman of CITIC Group.
